Jerry Atkinson incorporated JVA OPERATING COMPANY in 1987. Though the primary focus is on the Eastern Shelf of the Permian Basin, JVA has conducted drilling and production operations in seven states over the years. Currently, JVA is focused on exploration and land acquisition in the Permian Basin. The company operates approximately 100 wells in Stonewall, Coke, Nolan, Runnels, and Garza counties.


The company also owns non-operating working interest in Texas, California, Utah and North Dakota.

    After Jerry Atkinson graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, he spent three years in the United States Army. Following hi military service, he moved to Midland in 1965 with Dearborn Chemical Company, a division of WR Grace & Co. In 1967, Jerry drilled his first well in the Permian Basin, initiating his career as an independent oil operator. After operating for 20 years as a proprietorship, JVA Operating Company was incorporated in 1987 and Jerry maintains an active role in the company. His professional affiliations include AAPG, SPE, WTGS, PBPA and IPAA.

    A native Midlander, Greg left home for Austin where he graduated from the University of Texas with a Bachelor of Arts in Economics in 1993. He continued his education at Houston Baptist University where he received his MBA in Accounting in 1998. After obtaining his CPA license in April of 2004, he worked for the corporate offices of Landry's Restaurants as Corporate Accounting Manager and Accounts Payable Manager. After five years with Landry's, Greg accepted the position of Controller for Wilson Fire Equipment. In 2008, Greg returned to Midland to be the Vice President of Finance/CFO for his father's company, JVA Operating Company.

    With over 30 years in the oil industry, Alan Erb has experience in the Appalachian, Illinois, Michigan, Central Oklahoma, East Texas and Permian Basin areas. He has two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Civil Engineering (1979) and another in Petroleum Engineering (1983), from Penn State University where he graduated with honors. While working on his Petroleum Engineering degree, Alan was employed by Penn Power & Light Co. as a Dam Engineer. In 1982, he ran the core lab for Pennzoil Exploration and Production Company. Alan was responsible for 300 wells as Company Engineer for Beeson Oil Producers, Inc. (1983-1989) and simultaneously worked as a part-time consultant for Erb Engineering. In 1990, 600 wells were under Alan's responsibility as he was the District Engineer for Equinox Oil Co. Following this management role, he became Operations Manager for Tamarack Petroleum Co. and managed 200-400 wells from 1991-2011. He is currently the Operations Manager for JVA Operating Company and holds membership in various oil & gas and geology societies. Alan is a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas.

    Ken Smith's experience in acquisition and divestiture projects, contracts, negotiations, title and fieldwork come from over 30 years in the oil/gas and energy industries. After obtaining his degree in Business Administration from Texas Tech University and later becoming a Certified Professional Landman, he spent time as a landman at Robert B. Ross & Association, Inc. (1980-1982) before working as a consulting petroleum landman in Midland. In 1984, Ken became district land manager for Abraxas Petroleum Corporation where he was responsible for all phases of the land department in Midland. From 1987 to 2010, he worked as a consulting petroleum landman throughout West Texas, the Texas Panhandle, Eastern Shelf, and Southeast and Northwest New Mexico. As land manager for Sharp Image Energy and then a staff landman for ConocoPhillips in 2010 and 2011, he was responsible for a number of wells and land departments. Most recently, Ken was the initial development supervisor for the Niobrara Project in Denver, Colorado. He now serves as the Land Manager for JVA Operating Company.
